Check-in & Check Out

Check in will be at the Lyons Den Camp Office just across the stream, near the entrance to camp.  Crews may check-in together as a group, or they can check in individually if traveling to camp separate.  Reminder that all gear will be hauled to your campsite by your Crew Advisor once issued a vehicle pass for your campsite (or you may option to backpack your gear to your site.)

Crews can check out on Sunday morning after the Venturing Officers Association Annual Assembly meeting (around 9:30 - 10AM).  All Crews are expected to clean up their campsite of all litter and leave it in as good or better condition then when you arrived.

Camping facilities:

Camp C.S. Klaus (www.campklaus.org) is a beautiful 200+ acre camp situated in two wooded valleys NW of Colesburg Iowa. The camp has served as the Northeast Iowa Council's main camping facility since 1956.  At Camp Klaus you will find Lake John Deere, the picturesque water falls, almost all facilities are new or have been recently renovated, a beach, shooting range, 40ft tall climbing and rappelling tower, many hiking trails and seven beautiful wooded campsites.  In 2010 the camp will be showcasing a major improvement in an entirely remodeled and expanded "Munter Lodge" dining hall.

Each campsite at Camp C.S. Klaus has many large 2 person open air tents with wood floors and cots provided.  Crews will be assigned to their campsite upon check-in.  Each campsite has a fire ring (or two), picnic tables, latrine and running water.

Vehicle Pass:

Your crew advisor will be issued 1 vehicle pass to take your crew's gear to your campsite so please plan on arriving with your entire crew close to the same time.  The vehicle pass may only be used only for hauling gear to your campsite on Friday night and for hauling gear out on Sunday morning.  The vehicle may remain parked in your campsite during the weekend.  All vehicles are subject to camp rules and must drive slowly (less then 10 MPH) through camp by approved adults.  Vehicles are not to be used for any other purpose.  All other vehicles must remain parked in the parking lot near the parade grounds.

Meals:

Meals will be provided in the Munter Lodge Dining Hall on Saturday (breakfast, lunch and dinner) and Sunday (breakfast).  We will have a cracker barrel available late on Friday evening so plan on eating prior to arriving at camp.

Showers:

Private shower facilities will be available at the Burchwood shower house on the top of the hill near most of the campsites.

Adult Leadership:

All crews must have adequate adult leadership.  Co-ed crews must have at least one male and one female advisor camping with the Crew in their campsite.

Storm shelters

Storm shelters at Camp C.S. Klaus are located in the dining hall basement (entrance on side facing the lake), the bottom of the health lodge, and the bottom of the VC (Visitors Center) building.  On short notice, there are many large sink holes near the campsites that can be used to seek shelter by lying along the inside edges of the sink hole.

This is an event that you will not want to miss...  after much success the last two years, this year looks to be the best Venturepalooza yet!  The Northeast Iowa Council Venturing Officers Cabinet has been working hard at planning an awesome event for all Venturers!  This year we are also extending an invitation to Out-of-council Venturing Crews to come join in on the fun!

Who: All Venturers (out-of-council Crews Welcome!)
What: Venturepalooza 3
Where: Camp C.S. Klaus near Colesburg, Iowa
When: July 9-11, 2010
Check-in: 6:30 - 8:00 PM Friday night
Check-out: After 10 AM Sunday

The theme for the weekend is "Clue"!  You will be teamed up with other Venturers to complete some awesome missions to help find the clues and solve the mystery.  Details on events and teams will be announced on Friday night so that you can plan out strategy with your entire team to complete your mission.  Back by popular demand, we will have Mr. Grant returning again this year to instruct our pistol and high powered rifle range!  The shooting range has been by far the most popular activity each of the last 2 years and we are glad to have him back!

Of course... this weekend will include much more!  We are planning some great social activities and games that everyone can enjoy.  Don't forget your swimsuit!

Be sure to tell your friends and get your Crews signed up before June 25th!!!

Venturing Ski Night

. Posted in News - Archive

Ski_Night

Northeast Iowa is planning a Venturing Crew Ski Outing February 26, 2010. We will be skiing/boarding at Sundown Mountain Friday evening from 4:00pm to midnight. We hope the cost will be $31.00 for this outing ($36 if you need a helmet). (See the signup sheet for variations and alternatives) This includes ski rentals, lesson, and lift ticket. The cost will depend if we can get 15 paying customers to attend. (The 15 must be purchasing at least a lift ticket) If we do not get 15, we have the option of going through the ticket window. If we have to go through the ticket window I would suggest anyone that has skied or boarded do not take a lesson, and anyone that has never skied select the beginner special. Our third alternative is to cancel the outing and return all checks. This will be determined on February 10th.

We meet at the South Lodge to stow your overnight gear and your sack lunch/dinner, then proceed to the Mountain Top building at (4pm), get our rental equipment, talk about safety, get an Orange arm-band, and have a ski or boarding lesson (at 5pm sharp). Anyone not taking a lesson must ski or ride using the buddy system. Helmets are required.

  • Family members may join us Skiing or Snowboarding. You must be at least 9 years old to join in the group lessons.
  • Crew members, leaders, and parents (no siblings) may stay overnight in the south lodge. Anyone not staying the night must leave at midnight. Crews may bring crock-pots with things like soup or chili for their dinner.
  • Bring a sleeping bag and mat to sleep on the floor.
  • Crews may bring video games and/or movies. (Keep games and movies age appropriate, EX: no R- rated movies).
  • We need to be packed up and have South Lodge cleaned up by 9am.

A separate sign-up Form needs to be filled out for each skier of an outing. This is a 2 piece form for a reason. The first page will be used by the ski coordinator to reserve your spot and get your equipment. The second page will be used to set up the lessons. We also allow siblings to participate as long a parent is at Sundown for the entire duration of the outing.

Yours in Scouting,

Steven Piersch,

Ski Coordinator
